From December to March nearly all the wintering sparrows in those buffers have been Song Sparrows. Hordes of White-throats are in the wooded regions ~ 100 yards away, but they do not seem to be using the buffer zones. During nesting seasons of 2000 and 2001, I did not find any Song Sparrows on the Pickering Creek grounds, but could always find some in the parking lots of the shopping villages in Easton. Seems like our Song Sparrows choose the town life for their nesting, but winter out in the farm regions. At my home feeders (rural setting, on five acres amongst farms) I manage to attract from one to three Song Sparrows each day through the winter.
