Both are possible and it is very hard to tell them apart in flight. The wing pattern and flight are nearly identical. The fact that the bird went into a pine grove certainly leaves Long-eared a possibility. They very rarely fly during the day except when flushed, but the bird was being harassed by crows and that may be the reason it was out and about. Rick Eirik A.T.
