Yesterday (Sat., 3/16) the Howard Co. Bird Club had an unusually productive visit to the five major access points of Triadelphia Reservoir. Two of these accesses are in Montgomery Co. (Greenbridge and Triadelphia Lake Rd.), two in Howard Co. (Pigtail and Big Branch), and the fifth is in both (Brighton Dam). There were 19 participants who collectively totaled 61 species for the outing (a correction from yesterdays post-walk tally), with the following highlights: HORNED GREBE (5 total; 4 in basic plumage; one in transition) DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT--6 Flyovers at the dam GREEN-WINGED TEAL--one flyover at the dam COMMON GOLDENEYE--one male that flew up the reservoir, then down the same; reasonable looks LONG-TAILED DUCK--nice adult male offering excellent looks on the calm water COMMON MERGANSER--only one adult male flying down the reservoir; they won't be around much longer BALD EAGLE--two adults, one on MoCo shoreline in tree; other on nest (?) in HoCo EASTERN PHOEBE--3 in various places; getting voicy TREE SWALLOW--about 4 over the lake; first in Ho Co for many of us PINE WARBLER--at least 3 singing at Greenbridge, one at Pigtail, and one at Big Branch EASTERN MEADOWLARK--one singing from a treetop along Triadelphia Lake Rd. (MoCo) RUSTY BLACKBIRD--3 at Pigtail, viewed from entry road (nice spotting Bonnie) PURPLE FINCH--4 or more female-plumaged birds along access road to Pigtail (nice spotting Ralph) By the way, accesses to the lake via the Triadelphia Lake Rd. (Mo Co) and into Pigtail are both CLOSED (due to lack of water?); however, we birded primarily the access roads, but also got permission from the visitor center to go into Pigtail. It was an unusually birdy morning with nice overcast weather, no wind, and very little rain. Far beyond what I was expecting.
