The Records Committee examined two specimens at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History a week ago and found that there were light head markings in basic plumage. One bird was from the South Shetlands, the other from Chile. So it seems that at least some populations of Kelp Gull can, indeed, have head markings in basic plumage. It would be nice to see a specimen from Brazil, where the nominate KEGU was described. Shrimpy appears to be derived from that population and has lighter head markings than the Chile bird did.
