Thanks to Danny Bystrak's report yesterday, Gwen and I got to see the male Eurasian Wigeon that has been spending time on the wetlands along Brown Station Road, Prince George's County. We saw the bird about 11 AM today from the Lord's Landing community overlook. You can see the back side of the wetlands well from in the community. Along with the Wigeon, we had about 60 Wood Duck, two Blue-winged Teal, a few Canada Geese, a Killdeer, a Snipe, and two Mallards. At School House Pond we had 10 Gadwall, 7 Northern Shovelers, 7 Snipe, a few Coot, a single Osprey overhead, and two Black Vultures doing what may be courtship display. The vultures were going into a dive similar to what the Red-shouldered Hawks do during breeding season, followed by some aerial acrobats. Pretty cool stuff. Last night, Gwen and I stopped at Myrtle Grove WMA just before dusk hoping to see Woodcook display. We had two birds fly in but saw or heard no displaying. Perhaps a little too cool. It was about 45 'F. As the night settled in we had about a dozen Fox Sparrow moving through the hedgerows, three Towhees, a few song sparrows and what was probably 60 or better White-throated Sparrow. Before the sparrows and Woodcock action we also had about 7 Wood Duck moving around the impoundments. At Bumpy Oak Road wetlands, before the stop at Myrtle Grove, we had two Wood Duck, two Hooded Mergansers, two Red-headed Woodpeckers, and a Phoebe.
