This morning (3/28) I checked my Atlas block (156/3). Here are some highl= ights... Spice Creek Bridge (on Rte 382) 4 GB Heron a few rusty blackbirds pair of wood ducks Spice Creek WMA (Tanyard Rd) pair of Car. wrens (very agitated as I passed...making their sc= olding sound) singing field sparrows, eastern towhees 6 eastern phoebe (fly catching) several e. bluebirds 1 adult bald eagle soaring over Spice Creek pileated woodpecker (quick glimpse as it flew before it landed = and started drumming/excavating? beyond sight) 2 female GC Kinglets 1 hermit thrush 1 red-shoulder hawk calling 1 unk buteo, flying high, light vertical "windows" middle 3d of= wing (underside); much broader than red-shouldered wing patch at base of= primaries. Any ideas? Nottingham NRMA (western shore of Patuxent) 2 black vultures (flying low) 3 more phoebes/2 more towhees 2 n. harriers (over marsh) 1 red-tail hawk (over marsh) several tree swallows (over marsh) ~30 bonaparte gulls (flying north over river) singing pine warblers =20 On the way back to Beltsville I stopped at Schoolhouse Pd at 1:00 pm. Nic= e assortment of waterbirds. 6 Am. coots 5m/2f n. shovelers several laughiing gulls pair of wood ducks pair of gadwalls a fem. belted kingfisher caught a fish ~25 bonaparte gulls arrived just as I was leaving. Wondered if= they were same group I spotted 2 hours earlier at Nottingham. 2 black vultures soared overhead and a small beaver was seen h= eading toward the beaver lodge. =20 Bon Birding!
