The tenant in our house at the time (a birder) listened for more winnowing after that, but to no avail. He blamed the deafening peeper chorus as a contributing factor. Snipes are to be found in the Jug Bay marshes until the middle of May, and rarely, but occasionally winnow toward the end of their stay (but then how much time do i spend listening after dark or before light?). My guess is that the breeders(?) in G.C. probably don't winnow as vigorously or late in the year because they are so few in number. Without the competition, they've got no reason to. An unfortunate fact, when we know that migrants are still around then. The west virginai record, i believe is of a downy young caught and banded during a woodcock banding effort at Canaan Valley, but don't quote me. There is a paper about it somewhere; i saw it years ago. danny bystrak bristol, AA Co.
