Jane had a meeting in Cambridge so we used it as an excuse to do some =
pre-meeting birding around Blackwater NWR. We went first to Bestpitch (2 =
houses, 2 boat ramps and a bridge) where the martin house there was fully =
occupied by Purple Martins. Yellow-throated Warblers, Pine Warblers and =
Common Yellowthroats sang from various locations near the bridge.

On the way to Blackwater we saw a house with 3 martin houses also fully =
occupied. Why is it there are so many martins over here and I have yet to =
see one in either St. Mary's or Calvert?

At Blackwater we saw at least 3 adult Bald Eagles and 3 subadults for =
sure. There were so many eagles at different locations that it's hard to =
know if there was overlap but at one time we for sure had 6 different =
birds. We also got great looks at a Delmarva Fox Squirrel just outside the =
entrance to the visitor's center on Key Wallace Dr. and another along the =
wildlife drive.

Ducks were pretty scarce but there were Northern Shovelers, Blue-winged =
and Green-winged Teal, Black Ducks, American Wigeon and of course =
Mallards.

We were just about frying in jeans and wishing that we had had the =
foresight to pack some shorts. It's got to be in the low 80s! But, there =
are some nasty thunderheads moving in that are sure to make our drive west =
interesting.
