The LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was singing in the area behind the pond above the parking area. This area was also good for PHOEBES and YELLOW PALM WARBLERS (also along the Towpath where it borders the pond). The Potomac River had a steady flight of DOUBLE-CREASTED CORMORANTS and many ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. A flock of about 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS flew up the Potomac. On the Potomac were LESSER SCAUP, HORNED GREBES, COOTS, 50 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, BUFFLEHEADS, WOOD DUCKS. Several OSPREYS were flying about, RED-SHOULDERED, COOPER'S and SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS were seen. A BALD EAGLE sat in a tree across the river. Woodpeckers seen were PILEATED, HAIRY, DOWNY, FLICKER, RED-BELLED, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and RED-HEADED. The RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen along the Towpath (location: across from the southern tip of the first wooded island (above Seneca) in the Potomac). Also here were about 20 PURPLE FINCHES feeding almost entirely on the buds of one specific tree - unfortunately I couldn't identify the tree. Several BLUE-GRAY KNATCATCHERS were seen. A PARULA WARBLER was heard just below milepost 24 and a HERMIT THRUSH was seen in the same area. GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS and a BROWN CREEPER were also seen. At Hughes Hollow, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was exploring a hole about 100 yards into the northwest impoundment (on the far edge of the impoundment from the parking area). FIELD SPARROWS were feeding along the path between the impoundments. PILEATED WOODPECKERS (probably pair) were at the Monocacy Aqueduct area. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were flying around the aqueduct.
