Also, please take a few minutes to check out PG Audobon's new web site - thanks to member Beth Kantrowitz for all the hard work she's put into it! Tomorrow night's meeting will also be Patuxent Bird Club's annual business meeting, with elections after the talk by Dr. Gill. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, 7:30 pm Beltsville Agriculture Research Center Bldg 011A "Colonizing Restored Grasslands on the Eastern Shore - a Success Story", presented by Dr. Doug Gill Dr. Gill, an ecology professor in the Biology Department at the University of Maryland in College Park, will describe the pioneering work he has carried out at Chino Farms on Maryland's Eastern Shore in cooperation with the farm's enlightened owners, the Sears family. Operating on some 200 acres of land set aside for the experiment, native grasses were carefully planted on former farm land. The resulting mix of vegetation has come to host a proliferation of vanishing grassland birds such as Grasshopper Sparrow, Bob-white, and even Dickcissel. Be prepared to be thrilled by Dr. Gill's famously delightful delivery, infectious enthusiasm, and an inspirational land management story that went wonderfully right.
