At one point we saw = an accipiter at a distance in the woods -- its tail was somewhat rounded = (definitely not squared off), but it lacked the pale nape of a Cooper's. = Size was difficult to judge, but suggested a male Cooper's. (Let me note = that I'm used to seeing both kinds of accipiters close up in my yard = during the winter, as they go after feeder birds.) Now, according to the park's bird list (birds in alphabetical order [!]) = that was available in the Nature Center, Cooper's is "rare" and present = October through March only, whereas Sharp-shinned is "uncommon" in = September through April. Obviously the Cooper's Hawks don't = automatically vanish on March 31, and this bird list may be out of date. Does anyone have any thoughts on the likelihood of this bird being a = Cooper's? Thanks.
