Just as soon as I found it, it took off, so I did not get a close examination of the details. It was hanging around between the duck ponds and the howler monkeys. It was either a Sharpie or a Coopers based on size only. At one point we saw an accipiter at a distance in the woods -- its tail was somewhat rounded (definitely not squared off), but it lacked the pale nape of a Cooper's. Size was difficult to judge, but suggested a male Cooper's. (Let me note that I'm used to seeing both kinds of accipiters close up in my yard during the winter, as they go after feeder birds.) Now, according to the park's bird list (birds in alphabetical order [!]) that was available in the Nature Center, Cooper's is "rare" and present October through March only, whereas Sharp-shinned is "uncommon" in September through April. Obviously the Cooper's Hawks don't automatically vanish on March 31, and this bird list may be out of date. Does anyone have any thoughts on the likelihood of this bird being a Cooper's? Thanks.
