It is a tidal freshwater estuary on the Patuxent River about 3 miles south of Hills Bridge (Rt. 4). There are spectacular viewing points from the high banks overlooking Jug Bay, and a very nice little drop in Visitor Center. Jug Bay is part of the Patuxent River Park of the MNCPPC. Follow Rt 4 to Rt 301, south. Take 301 about 2 miles to Croom Airport Road. Go left, follow to end. Turn right on Croom Road (Md. 382) follow two miles, turn right on Croom Airport Road. Follow to park entrance on left to Park Office area, and straight ahead to Croom Airport area. Jug Bay is best birded in slices, like a tasty pie. If you are going at the crack of dawn (now a little later because of DST, first bird Croom Airport all the way to its end. As you enter park boundary, check the park gates to the left carefully for gate opening time--you will come back this way. Once you enter the park, follow Croom Airport Road to its end. Croom Airport Road is deeply wooded for about a half-mile down to the old Croom Airport, a historic air-field that dates from WWII, now farmed. Lots of good forest interior dwellers on the way down, and lots of good raptors when you get to the end of the road. Walk to the left down the perimeter road if the gates are locked (leave note or obvious birder message on dashboard if you out of site from your car.) Come back to park gates at time of opening, and bird down to Jug Bay. Great viewing along entrance road once you get to the river.Be sure to go down the hill from to the docks. Look for the famous Greg Kearns when you get to the office. Greg is an excellent birder and will be glad to update you on what may have been seen in the past few days. If you come back to Jug Bay on another day, to hike, bike, or drive the 4-mile Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Driving Tour is a must do (open for driving on Sundays only, but you can sometimes hike it at other times). Early in the morning there is sometimes a luminous, pearlescent glow in the mist over the marshes. All in all, a lovely spot and great birds, too.
