You missed my point. I was responding to the blurb about local authorities removing Monk Parakeet nests some years ago in MD; my discussion was that whether introduced, escaped, or in cases like the Cattle Egret, arriving here on their own wings, our attitude is still "what impact does this have on humans?" first and not "gee I guess we are really screwing with the balance here". I personally marvel at the adaptability of some species (House Finch, European Starling, various weaver finches that are here to stay) and like it or not, birds have been adapting around climate changes, ice ages, plate tectonics, and, recently, a certain pesky primate species that seems harmless but is actually quite virulent. (Yes, before I get shouted down I know this is a bird sightings list server but hey - I was a birder before I was a naturalist and I think it's important to discuss these things here lest we get lost in lists, twitchers and such). ********************** Frank Boyle ravenfrank@earthlink.net Laurel, MD ********************** -----Original Message----- From: Maryland Birds & Birding [mailto:MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM] On Behalf Of Steve Huy Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 8:06 AM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: Re: [MDOSPREY] Introduced Birds - A Naturalist's View Are Carolina parakeets & Redwinged black birds introduced? ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
