I found a pair this morning in lower Rock Creek Park South of the Duke Ellington Bridge and Calvert Street Bridge close to the Park Service Training Stables. They were in mixed company with a few Black-Crowned Night Herons. The BC flushed as I appoached but the YC stayed, which is how I found them. There was no nest in site. I can't say that I tried too hard to find the nest as I didn't want to scare the birds away. I sat down in the vegetation across and down the creek a bit and just watched them for a while. They moved around but didn't show me any feeding, breeding or nest building. The good news is that they remained at the site even when I returned later in the morning. Let's just hope they stick around and nest. Yesterday I forgot to mention that I saw a 1/2 dozen Eastern Tiger Swallowtails spread out in the upper parts of Rock Creek Park in several locations. Other birds today in Rock Creek Park South of the National Zoo: Pileated Woodpecker Palm Warblers Ruby Crowned Kinglets Eastern Phoebe 3 Belted Kingfishers 12 Wood Ducks plus all the usual suspects.
