MYRTLES, YELLOW PALMS and a BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER were around the picnic area across the creek from the parking area. A WHITE-EYED VIREO was in the bushes along the road that goes behind the pond. Also in that area was a SWAMP SPARROW. PARULAS, providing great views, grew increasing common each day so by Sunday the songs were readily heard along the Canal. The RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were at their usual spot (about even with the first wooded island in the Potomac) and a good number of PURPLE FINCHES were in the same area. HAIRY WOODPECKERS seemed very active and I saw at least 2 and probably 4 different birds. I did not hear or see any Yellow-throated Warblers so if anyone has seen any along the Canal I would be interested in the approximate area where they were seen. An OSPREY was sitting in a tree eating breakfast and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK skimmed over the trees looking for breakfast. Above Pennyfield, a few PURPLE MARTINS were chasing insects over the river. Near Monocacy Aqueduct, ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were flying about and a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was singing. Not seeing a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER I went to Fletcher's Boathouse and walked upriver along the Crescent Trail about 100 yards beyond milepost 8 and there in the huge Sycamores was one. Thanks to those who had noted it on MDOSPREY. Happy birding, Dan Eberly Bethesda.
