On April 12th, I saw my first group on Purple Martins, checking out = (martin) houses at the south end of Cox Neck Rd. A Saturday trip to Terrapin Park revealed fewer birds than were seen by = the Talbot Co. trip there the previous weekend, but White-eyed Vireos = were in. A swing by some of the marshy areas along Rt. 18, near the = Narrows brought my first Snowy Egret of the spring as well. At noon today, I took a walk around my work site. It is 200 acres of = mixed grassland, wetlands, and secondary growth forest that sits = astride the headwaters of Crab Alley Bay. E. Meadowlarks abound - a = whistled imitation of their song elicited the "chuckling" calls from at = least four birds at a time. I flushed up at least six Common Snipe from = wet areas. Ruby-crowned Kinglets and my first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher = called, and lone Hermit Thrush was still hanging about. Field Sparrows could be heard everywhere, and all the Bluebird houses = are occupied by Tree Swallows. A passing Sharp-shinned Hawk quieted = everybody down!
