Highlights were: Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-throated Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo (hey, it's a year first), Northern Parula, Pine Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush. John creek) Northern Parula (saw 3; heard at least 12 more) Yellow-rumped Warbler (heard lots; only saw 1) Pine Warbler Prothonotary Warbler (2 males; Wow!; first I've ever seen in this section; 1 was between canal and river, in the woods, just before Lock 9 - there's a canoe on the opposite bank of the canal; he sang constantly, moved frequently; the second one was about 1/4 mile west or north of Milepost 8, where there is a cabin on an island in the river; like the first, it sang as it moved around, first up-river about 50 yards, then back to the house, then toward my side of the river to a sycamore in a rock-strewn island) Louisiana Waterthrush (sang lustily along Cabin John creek, on the river side, moving from tree to tree; at one point, descending to the creek for a sip, then back up, singing) Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow (brilliant plumage) Northern Cardinal (quit counting after 5 males, 1 female sighted; calls everywhere) Red-winged Blackbird Common Grackle (50+) Brown-headed Cowbird (6 males, 1 female) Also had a Ruby-throated Hummingbird (male) at feeder again this am and pm. ============ Frank Powers Glen Echo, MD Montgomery County mattfp@aol.com ============ ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
