The highlights were an ORCHARD ORIOLE, WARBLING VIREO, SAVANNAH SPARROW & YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER brightening up the picnic area as I ate my gourmet hot dog. Overhead was a kettle of 5 BROADWINGS, 2 SHARP-SHINED HAWKS AND 1 OSPREY. A HARRIER flew solo. Along the Canal RED-EYED VIREO, PARULAS, PROTHONOTARY and YELLOWTHROAT were seen or heard. An afternoon walk along the Towpath upriver from Seneca provided great views of PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS at the nestboxes along the shoreline of the pond. The highlights at Seneca on Saturday/Sunday were the PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS (chickadees were battling for one nestbox). The canal has a small amount of water in it with some small logs and branches about where the first stream intersects with the Canal ( a little upriver from the pond). Both LOUISIANA and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES found that location to their liking on Saturday and Sunday (providing great views). A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was at the Seneca picnic area and an ORCHARD ORIOLE was in the trees near the Waterhtrushes. A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was seen and heard in the large trees along the edge of the Potomac near the pond. I had another gourmet hot dog at the General Store near Seneca. CHIPPING SPARROWS and one male PURPLE FINCH added to the enjoyment of the meal. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was carrying prey at the intersection of Riley's Lock Road and River Road. PURPLE MARTINS, TREE, ROUGH-WINGED AND BARN SWALLOWS were flying along the Potomac at Monocacy Aqueduct.
