Her residence is on the west side of I-695 just south of the ramp from the merge of eastbound I-70. One morning I awoke to a mob of crows, jays and others raising hell with something in the tall grass along the woodland at the bottom of her yard. After a few minutes I saw the ears of an animal sticking up above the grasses and at first assumed that it was a fox. Then the beast stood up and walked a few feet before laying down on a knoll where it could be observed quite clearly. To my surprise it was a coyote and not a fox. Although the critter had a bad case of mange, it was clearly a coyote and not a fox. 3 1/2 years in Phoenix gave me a good opportunity to observe and learn about coyotes and this was certainly one. It's head was too square and the shape of the ears were wrong for a fox. In addition, the animal was just a bit too large in structure. I have read for about 15 years that coyotes were being found in Maryland and most other states in the northeast, but this has been my only encounter with one east of the Rockies.
