The White-throated Sparrows will follow in a week or so; = I'll miss them. However, the change of seasons has its compensations -- = my first catbird has returned! As I was walking into the house just now, = it took a moment to register what I was hearing. Soon I located a = slightly damp catbird broadcasting its wonderful sound from the shelter = of a white pine. By the way, the May issue of the Appalachian Mountain Club magazine, AMC = Outdoors, has a feature article on learning to bird by ear ("Notes from = the Field") that should encourage beginners to improve their ID skills. = The AMC is also offering a number of birding workshops at various = locations in the northeast this year. (The AMC is a terrific nonprofit = organization focusing on conservation and recreation in the Appalachian = region; check out their website at www.outdoors.org .)
