Also present at that site were Common Yellowthroats, Field Sparrows, Catbird, Towhee, White-eyed Vireo, Crested Flycatcher and Downy Woodpecker. At a more heavily wooded site in the area, Ovenbird and Wood Thrush calls were ringing. A Black-and-White Warbler was present, as were many Yellow-rumped Warblers. Toward the eastern end of our county yesterday (4/24) - in the Kings Creek area - the Yellow-throated Warbler mentioned in postings a few days ago was easily found in the 'same' Loblolly Pine tree. Calls of Prothonotory Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo and Common Yellowthroat were heard there too. Two pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were actively feeding in a Sycamore tree beside the Kings Creek bridge, along with hordes of Goldfinches. A Phoebe was near the bridge - I did not study its activities long enough to discover a nest, though bridges often provide such great places for Phoebes to nest. On Tuesday (4/23) I visited a duck blind on private property where a Black Vulture is raising its young. Two very ugly down-covered critters were present on the bare though messy floor. The babies were only about 6 or 8 inches long. The proud and protective mother was perched in a nearby tree. In the Creek beside the duck blind there was a foraging Tundra Swan, which my local escort said had been there for most of the spring. It does not look injured, just lonely.
