On my first pass I didn't see woodpeckers but that was probably because it was raining hard. A little further on, around the intersection of Fridinger Mill Rd and Eckart Road the habitat looked really juicy and the rain stopped. There were dead trees and woodpecker holes all over the place. Soon I heard suspicious sounds, kind of half way between a Red-belly and a squirrel. After about 15 minutes I finally saw one Red-headed Woodpecker and then a second one moving from the woods on Eckart Rd to wooded yards on Fridinger Mill Rd. I saw one there again about an hour later. Returning down Albert Rill Rd I saw 2 more Red-headed Woodpeckers in the oak woods by the many mail boxes for the 2200 block. The area does indeed seem to be Red-headed Woodpecker heaven. I also wandered further up Eckart Rd where there was a great swampy pond with a few Wood Ducks and a Great Blue Heron and a singing White-crowned Sparrow. I saw another White-crowned Sparrow on Hoover Mill Rd. Singing Baltimore Orioles were at many locations throughout. Prior to all this I stopped at Soldiers Delight visitor center's parking area which was swarming with 50+ warblers, about 60% Yellow-rumped Warblers, 30% Palm, and 10% Black-throated Green Warblers, my first of the season.
