We walked the moderate distance downstream along the Towpath to around milepost 27 where we heard them calling immediately and continuously. Seeing them was a different story and turned out to be a several hour challenge (I am writing this hoping that our experience may help others if they don't see them from the Towpath and decide to go into the woods.). We were also distracted by a Black-throated Green, a Black-and-White, an accommodating Redstart and a Yellow-throated Vireo, all in the same area. Although the Ceruleans did fly into the small strip of trees located between the Canal and the Potomac, we never could locate it. We finally went into the woods where several were singing. After we walked into the woods (no path) about 100 feet, we came upon a open area that appeared to be an abandoned road (running parallel to the Towpath) with low plant growth and a path. Bordering this 20 foot wide and long (100 yards) area were several large Sycamores (which the Ceruleans seemed to favor) with vines going up the trunk. The Warblers kept flying back and forth across the open area - we didn't see them flying only heard them sing. Although the Sycamores did not have much leaf growth, we took a long time to finally locate a Cerulean Warbler singing from "branches' of a large vine fairly high up and near the trunk.
