I, too, am saving all my pennies in order to upgrade my binoculars. But where do I go to test individual bins? Cape May Bird Observatory lets you test them to your heart's content - you can even go outside with them and scan the surrounding trees, you don't have to rely on "birding" the various objects in the store. Plus, if you're a CMBO member you get a discount. Finally, the people who work there are really helpful and nice and can walk you through your decision-making, and it's a great excuse to spend the weekend in Cape May. One caveat if you've never been there is that the CMBO store is a total zoo on big birding weekends, so you'd probably have to postpone your purchase until June unless you can get up there on, say, a Wednesday or something.
