Patuxent MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hi All - Toni and I forgot that Patuxent Refuge doesn't open until 8 AM, so we had time to look for the Monk Parakeet at the Laurel Target. The nest is impressive - I'm surprised PEPCO hasn't torn it out, since it looks like a fire hazard. The parakeet showed up within a few minutes and continued cramming more sticks into the nest. Never saw more than one bird. When we got to Patuxent, the best birds were singing Prothonotary Warbler, buzzing Blue-winged warbler, Spotted Sandpiper, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, and several Orchard Orioles. In addition to two singing full adult male orioles, there were two singing 1-year males, and one oriole that we're not sure of. It looked like a female (no black on throat), but it was singing like a male (and perching prominently). Are there some 1-year males without the black throat, or maybe 1-year Baltimore Orioles that are still yellow? It had no hint of orange (either plain or burnt).
