While in the past I have written 'crowned' when I meant 'throated', this time there was a brightly plumaged White-crowned Sparrow among a smattering of other sparrows at Constitution Gardens near the Vietnam Memorial. Specifically, the birds were between the Constitution Gardens rest room and the Vietnam Memorial, and some (including the White-crowned Sparrow) were bathing in a puddle on the path. For subspecies hunters, the bird's bill was yellowish-brown and it had black on the lores. Other birds in the scattered flock included a Savannah Sparrow, White-throated Sparrows, Song Sparrows, some Chipping Sparroows, House Sparrows, House Finches and American Goldfinches. Also at Constitution Gardens were the first Mall Eastern Kingbird of the year, a few Baltimore Orioles (also new this year), lots and lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers (almost one per tree) and a couple of Yellow Warblers (also new on the Mall).
