The *second* one was a White-crowned Sparrow right outside the door to the deck, coming to our little pond. (As with yesterday's Pine Siskin, not a bird one expects to see in early May!) However, my adrenaline had been jump-started five minutes earlier when I discovered a Black Rat Snake stretched along the top of the door molding (inside the kitchen, that is). It was a young 'un, about two feet long with an attractive blotchy pattern. Armed with brooms, my husband and I played a short game of snake hockey and persuaded the unexpected visitor to leave the premises. Sort of a shame, actually -- the snake would have been really helpful against our mice. Our household motto, as I may have noted previously, is "Never a dull moment."
