We seem to be down to 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, but the thrushes are here, including 2 Veerys, 1 Gray-cheeked, 1 Swainson's and 3 Wood. The warblers for today were 4 Parula, 2 Chestnut-sided, 1 Cape May, 3 Black-throated Blue, 10 Yellow-rumped, 1 Black-throated Green, 1 Blackpoll, 3 Redstarts, 2 Ovenbirds, 1 Northern Waterthrush and 2 Common Yellowthroats. The garnish included 3 Scarlet Tanagers, 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 2 Indigo Buntings and 4 Baltimore Orioles. We still have some 10-15 White-throated Sparrows. Last night the southerly winds and partial overcast were again favorable for hearing migrating thrushes. Over about a 20 minute period, starting at 11:45, I heard 14 Veerys, 10 Swainson's and 11 Wood Thrushes, plus a few I couldn't pin down to species. For those who would like to try this exercise and don't have Bill Evans' no longer available tape, take heart. There is a CD in production by Bill Evans and Michael O'Brien (shameless, blatant plug) that will tell you more than you could ever want to know about the flight notes of nocturnal migrants. Now you will be able to set up a microphone on your roof and identify the passing parade from the comfort of your family room - or your den if the family makes too much noise or can't tolerate your deviant behavior. Seriously, this will revolutionize the collection of migration data. Coming soon to an enlightened store near you; well maybe not so near. Paul O'Brien Rockville, Mont.
