Despite dark gray skies and distinctly cool temperatures, the birding was consistently interesting. Highlights follow: 1 COMMON LOON flying over going north 2 VEERY 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH 1 TENNESSEE WARBLER 4 NORTHERN PARULA 3 YELLOW WARBLER 4 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER 3 MAGNOLIA WARBLER 4 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER 10+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER 2 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER 1 (male) BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLER 2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER 6 AMERICAN REDSTART 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER 4 OVENBIRD 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH 4 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT 2 HOODED WARBLER 3 SCARLET TANAGER At one point we had 8 species of warbler at the same time in a medium-sized Willow Oak! After the others returned to Montgomery, I moved on to Rockburn Branch Park and picked up a BROWN THRASHER and 2 singing KENTUCKY WARBLERS. Since the birds were still active and the temperature was still cool, I went over to Patapsco Valley State Park and walked the trail on the Baltimore County side. Highlights here: 2 VEERY 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH 2 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and 14 species of warblers including the following, new for the day: 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH 2 CANADA WARBLER American Redstarts and Northern Waterthrushes were particularly numerous along the trail. On the Howard County side of the park I came across a loudly calling LEAST FLYCATCHER. Always nice to have a 20-warbler day! Doesn't happen so often these days. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD D.H.
