Hope everybody got a chance to go out birding early in the morning in the last 3 days. I visited Sycamore Landing (Wed. 5/8) and Riley's Lock (Th. and Fri.). Lots of birds, many warblers (in ~ 1.5 hours I had 14 species of warblers Wed, 16 on Th. and 17 today). Highlights: Riley's Lock - Th. 5/9/02: It seems that there was a major fall-out, an incredible number of birds where around. Best birds: Golden-winged Warbler by the pond (turning basin) and Mourning Warbler further up the towpath. This bird could be the same reported by John Hubbel on 5/5. Riley's Lock - Fri. 5/10/02: Two Mourning Warblers. One is probably the same I saw yesterday. Today it afforded spectacular looks at close range, it was in a tangle of vegetation inside the dried-out canal bed. I marked the spot by tying apiece of white paper tissue to a short plant. This is on the right side of the towpath as one walks upstream. Probably some 100 yards past the first stream that goes under the towpath after the pond. The other one was kind of half=way between the spot where I saw the one mentioned above and the end of the turning basin. It was not in the canal but up a ravine with dense growth, I heard it sing and got glimpses. Had a Least Flycatcher that was well seen and heard. Also a Yellowthroated Warbler was heard and then seen at a tall Sycamore by the parking lot at Riley's Lock. ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
