Comments: To: pvank@cais.net, judyschaefer@attglobal.net MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=gb2312 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Judy Schaefer and I conducted our DC May Count at Oxon Cove; Poplar Point; Kenilworth Park; and the stretch of M Street SE from a little west of the 11th Street Bridge eastward, to and including the RR bridge over the Anacostia. Access notes: The old road leading into Oxon Cove from near the impoundment lot is blocked; no parking near there; foot entry forbidden, feral dogs said to be there. Access to Oxon Cove from the DC side is now only via the paved hiker/biker trail leading from DC Village to the footbridge over Oxon Creek and the Oxon Hill Farm on the other side of the creek. Poplar Point remains officially closed. Our total day's count was 66 species, and warbler count was: Myrtle 1, Common Yellowthroat 20, Yellow 23. Rock Creek Park and the C&O Canal have nothing to fear on this score. Best definite DC bird was a female Bobolink perched in a low bush, then flew into trees, in Anacostia Park. Best bird overall was a Wild Turkey flushed by me from the woods and seen by Judy who was on the paved trail, about 200 yards from its DC Village end. Problem is, our maps appear to show almost the entire length of this path in Maryland, although it certainly starts in DC. A Bob-White call was heard several times in this area; it seemed to me from the distant side of Oxon Creek, but later possibly on the near side. Probably in Maryland even in the latter case. I'll leave it to Peter Vankevich how to compile these birds for the May Count, and I suspect the only valid DC Comp List bird would be Bobolink, if none have been reported earlier in the week. I'll try to pin down the cartography though. We failed to observe Chat, Grasshopper Sparrow, Willow Flycatcher.
