A tremendous fallout of migrants on May 10 left the woods "dripping" with warblers, orioles, and other migrants. The Holy Order of Loggerhead Shrikes raises funds for Pronatura Veracruz, the Mexican conservation organization dedicated to preserving the Veracruz River of Raptors. Our team racked up 151 species of birds, birding nonstop from 3 am to 11:30 pm in southern New Jersey, breaking the previous team record. Team members Gordon Gover, Jim Green, Andy Rabin, and captain Don Simonson scored several "firsts" this year during a wonderful day competing against more than 65 other teams: - First time ever competing against native New Jersey teams in the "Resident Team" category. (NJ native Gordon Gover, formerly of the Nature Conservancy team, was a great addition to the team this year.) - First time ever competing in the State-wide category. (We expanded our route to include Cumberland and Atlantic Counties plus Cape May County) - First time ever to DOUBLE the $ amount of pledges over the previous year. - First time ever to break 150 species barrier. - First time SWAINSON"S WARBLER and BLACK RAIL for most of the team members! Good birding!
