Webb" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit First, I was informed today that the Western Kingbird WAS seen at Fort McHenry Saturday, the 3rd day after it's discovery, by the sycamores along the seawall at the SW corner of the fort. To be sheltered from the wind and to be a little more relaxed today, I went to Milford Mill Park -- both the Milford Mill Rd (mm) section and the Queen Anne Rd (qa) section, which actually had more visible warblers. The highlight was a Gray-Cheeked Thrush (mm, near entrance). It appeared to be at the cold gray-brown end of the spectrum, like a Swainson's Thrush but with a pale gray, modest eye-ring, and faint streaks in the gray cheeks, which I notice Sibley seems to indicate is distinctive vs. Bicknell's (??). That's the first one I've seen in several years, and one of the best looks. At the QA Rd end, there was yet another Wilson's Warbler. I finally think I have learned the song and realize I probably heard it the other day on May Count. One version seems something like a Northern Waterthrush but not as powerful, the other is like a Myrtle Warbler but buzzier and faster. For the BBA, attn: Pete Webb, there was a female Wood Duck followed by 5 tiny young where the MM path turns around. Canada Warblers were really thick, perhaps 10 or more in both areas. Veeries were also quite numerous and vocal on the MM path. Sadly, there were no big, colorful beauties (tanagers, grosbeaks, or orioles). The warbler and thrush list is: Milford Mill Rd: Gray-cheeked Thrush Swainson's Thrush Veery (at least 5) Wood Thrush Northern Parula Magnolia Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler American Redstart Northern Waterthrush Common Yellowthroat Wilson's Warbler (heard) Canada Warbler (8+) Queen Anne Rd: Northern Parula Yellow Warbler Magnolia Warbler Blackpoll Warbler Black-and-white Warbler American Redstart Northern Waterthrush (the best long, close-up look I ever had) Common Yellowthroat Wilson's Warbler Canada Warbler Tomorrow I think I'm off for a few peaceful days in Western Maryland to be awash in even more warblers and other goodies.
