In the Spring migrations of 1999 and 2000, I observed Swainson's Thrushes and Northern Waterthrushes in the alley behind the church where I serve. Last year, either because of my inattentiveness or for some factor heaven only knows, I didn't spot either species there. This year we are back on track. For the last two days the Swainson's Thrushes have returned, and this morning I heard the familiar call of the Waterthrush (and found him/her/it by a backyard pond the size of a wading pool). In previous years, I have spotted (and heard!) Gray-cheeked Thrush in this little alley as well, so I will keep at the alert. In the meanwhile, it's good to see old friends again.
