We went to the National Zoo yesterday and scoped the BCNH's and their yet to fledge juves for a couple of hours (those we saw will be flying any day) . We also enjoyed scoping from a max of 50 feet, the many waterfowl resident at the Wetlands Exhibit. If you haven't been to see the BCNH's, GO TODAY! There are several nests just outside the main entrance to the Bird House. The Heron dropping caution sign will point you to them. We had dinner at Pizzeria Paradiso and stopped on the way home at the second overlook going west on GW Parkway. Almost as soon as we got our binos focused and started calling out the birds, our house guest from Florida, Charlie Brake, saw a BCNH flying up river (from above) and we all watched it disappear under the shore beneath us. Saw three more and scoped one who stopped to fish for a few minutes on the opposite shore. Needless to say, we were sure we had died and gone to BCNH Heaven.
