It will open at 5 a.m. two mornings, June 15 and June 29. The gates usually open at 8 a.m. So all you birders who have complained that 8 a.m. is just too late, here is your chance. Refuge Public Use Coordinator Rick Potvin informs me that he hopes to repeat early openings in July and August. Dates for those months have not been set, and are not certain as yet. Both flavors of tanager are to be found there, I heard both yesterday. One or two Barred Owls were about in broad daylight. Visitors MUST check in at the Visitor Contact Station. The North Tract is open for hiking, jogging, biking, fishing, birding, wildlife viewing, and photography. Most other uses are prohibited. The entrance is located on Rt. 198 east of Laurel, between the Batimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 32. Gates are open 8-8 7 days a week until September 1. Visitors will not be admitted onto the refuge a half hour before closing. For futher info, call 410-673-3304 from 8-8.
