You will likely do much of your birding very early or late when shadows and lack of light make good hiding for potential criminals and when there are fewer witnesses. "A reasonable amount of common sense and caution" can only go so far as you try to find that cerulean in the tree tops. You won't be listening for approaching footsteps or watching your surroundings very well. You are less likely to be attacked if in a small group than if you are alone.
