Vaughn North pond in Worcester Co. Among the pleasantries were a Great Horned Owl flushed out of the east end of the pine woods, and a one minute visit by 11 Black-necked Stilts, the most I have ever seen in Worcester Co. Several other shorebirds stopped in over time, including Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Willet (Eastern), lots of Semipalmated Sandpipers, Least Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitcher (griseus). Later at Truitt's Landing a nice mud flat to the south of the road attracted Black-bellied Plovers and up to 18 Semipalmated Plovers. Other shorebirds included another Black-necked Stilt, Greater Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers and Dunlin. There was a steady trickle of Glossy Ibis moving north at Truitt's, but no White-faced that I saw. Maybe next year. Closer to home, a lot closer in fact, the Gray-cheeked Thrush was still in the woods behind my house today, along with a lone Blackpoll Warbler, the residue of the migrants that were in Upper Watts Branch Park last week. I haven't seen or heard a Wood Thrush in almost 3 weeks. I am hoping that means they have young in nests, but I don't know where they are. That worries me as they have always nested here. This would not be an opportune time to quit the area, what with the Atlas, and all that. Paul O'Brien Rockville, Mont.
