I took the trail from the parking area off Trotter Rd. In hopes of locating the Summer Tanager reported a few weeks back by Hans Holbrook, I bore rightt at marker 1. Several Scarlets were about, but no Summer. I continued to the river, followed the trail along the river, and shortly after it looped back up the hill into the woods, I encountered the cuckoo. It posed just long enough to give me an excellent look at the tail and bill, then disappeared. It was silent. The time was between 11 and 12, I didn't look at my watch the whole time I was in. Warning, the mosquitos are thick and voracious at that point. Warblers were thin, but a few were about. It wasn't helped by my late start of 1030 Blue-winged warblers 2-3 C. Yellowthroat - I wasn't counting Blackpoll 1 Ovenbird - I didn't count, but clearly territorial Kentucky - 2 LA Waterthrush - 1 I also noted at least two Yellow-throated Vireos. Likewise, two Scarlet Tanagers. Acadians were hiccuping all over. Total species was 41, not great for May, but I enjoyed sleeping in!
