Even though we had a large group and walked briskly, I still managed to rack up a satisfactory bird list. Virtually all birds were heard rather than seen, because the woods there are very thick this time of year. Mallard Mourning dove Belted kingfisher Pileated woodpecker Red-bellied woodpecker Eastern wood-pewee Acadian flycatcher Great crested flycatcher Red-eyed vireo American crow Carolina chickadee Tufted titmouse White-breasted nuthatch House wren Carolina wren Blue-gray gnatcatcher Mockingbird Catbird American Robin Wood thrush Starling Red-winged blackbird Common grackle Cowbird Northern cardinal Eastern towhee ...plus there were a couple of warblers I couldn't identify by sound (I know, I should study my tapes!). There must have been Chimney Swifts, too, but I'm not conscious of having heard them. Previous hikes on that trail have also yielded Red-shouldered Hawk and Wood Duck. ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
