But did some birding while there. Two Yellow-crowned Night-Herons were in a swampy stream area. Begin at the next dirt road on the right along Hunting Quarter Road after passing the parking area at the impoundments (going in the direction of Washington). After a moderate distance toward the Potomac, a bridge crosses a stream/wooded swampy area. Standing on the bridge, the herons were upstream in the water very near the bridge. Monday, we went to New Germany State Park in western Maryland. This is an annual trek to see wildflowers - Painted Trillium and Pink Lady Slippers - wasn't disappointed although they were a little after their peak. Birding was done primarily along the stream that flows out of the lake - a beautiful stream that flows through a fairly mature forest of mostly Hemlock and birch with Rhododendron growing along the streambank. The warblers seen there were fairly numerous - Black-throated Blues & Greens and Canadas. Also seen were several Magnolias and a short look at a male Blackburian. Blue-headed vireos were easy to see and we enjoyed watching/hearing a singing Veery. And, of couse, couldn't help but take a refreshing swim in the beautiful lake.
