Since the issue of 1st summer was raised, can someone tell us what (and when) Pacific loons moult when they go from 1st winter to 1st summer? I have no idea what fresh feathers look like on the back of a non-breeding plumaged Pacific Loon, but the back feathers on this bird looked rather plain dark brown and for the most part quite featureless.
