I don't have Jonsson's book here with me but if I remember correctly, the =
bird shown with a chinstrap is a first summer bird. The adult Arctic Loons =
are not depicted as having a chinstrap. Of course, my memory is terrible =
so I'll have to look it up tonight.

In the meantime, here's a link to Surfbirds, a British web site. You'll =
have to scroll down a few photos to get to the Black-throated Diver =
(Arctic Loon). This bird appears to be a first summer and you can =
definitely see the chinstrap.

Tyler does not mention the age of the arctica shown by Jonsson=20
with a chin-strap.  Could this feature become more prominent with=20
age, or is the Jonsson bird an exception?  I can say nothing on the=20
basis of personal experience, never having seen an Arctic Loon to=20
my own satisfaction.

In any case, there seems to be no one maintaining that the Clopper Lake
loon  is Arctic rather than Pacific.
