I suspect a good number of them are this year's hatch birds. The distance walked was about 1.5 miles, along the south bank of the Patapsco River. Interesting, because the same area produced the best movement of migrating Northern Waterthrushes I've experienced, just a couple weeks ago. Also of interest during the walk were numerous N. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWs going in and out of probable nest holes along the banks of the river. A real treat for me was hearing a singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER on the Baltimore Co. side of the river, near the pond in the Glenartney section of the park. I've only run into a few of these birds in my atlas block, and none has stayed put. Maybe this will be the first. An afternoon walk along the north bank of the river, east of US 1, produced a singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (on the Howard Co. side, behind the Elkridge Furnace Inn; this bird has been here since the May Count), and an OSPREY further downstream, now within safe dates, thus producing another atlas tick. Also, along the power lines north of the river, I was delighted to pick up three different vocalizing YELLOW-BREASTED CHATs, a bird that's been difficult to come by this year.
