On June 11, I observed my first Charles County Brown Pelicans. They were on the Potomac River between Nanjemoy Creek and Port Tobacco Creek between 11:00 am and 2:30 pm. There were at least three birds and all were immature and seen plunging for food. We were on a boat, but you may be able to see them from the dock at Capt'n Billy's Seafood Restaurant at Popes Creek on the Potomac. A Ruddy Duck was also seen at the mouth of Nanjemoy Creek flying just above the water. Now while on the Potomac in this area you will have to look twice at any large bird flying over the water. Bald Eagle and Osprey are so common in this area that I have gotten oblivious to them at times at they fly overhead. I wouldn't be surprised if you see them up around the Woodrow Wilson Bridge this summer. Keep you eyes peeled and check out any large birds along the Potomac above Nanjemoy Creek. This may be my last post before I leave for VT for the summer. I will be teaching at an Audubon youth camp as the ornithology instructor. It will be my first time to VT and I hope to get a few life birds. If anyone has suggestions of good birding places up there, please contact me off list.
