I had responded to Sue privately regarding power line access, but figured I would add my two cents here. I cannot speak about every mile or powerline that exists, however there is some myth involved in thinking that the utility company owns the land that the towers stand on and the lines run over, or that they can grant access to that land. I have a few hundred yards of power line owned by Virginia Power (or whatever they are called today). Virginia Power is not authorized to permit anyone onto that property except for work on the lines or the clearing. The land under power lines is typically privately owned, and access would require permission from individual land owners. Simply put, the utility companies have a right of way, but that's it. I often get requests from Hunt Clubs and hunters in general about access to the property, however I have had a couple instances of having to approach armed people to tell them to leave. They were under the impression that it was quasi-public property. Cheers...
