Shore atlasing MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi All, Sorry for the 24-hr delay in posting. I did some atlas work in my blocks in the Goldsboro Quad in Caroline and Queen Anne's counties this Sunday (23 June). Nancy and I added 22 species and 9 confirmations to the Goldsboro CW block (61 total species 17 confirmations), and had 51 species and 13 confirmations in the Goldsboro CE block. Highlights included - 2 singing male Dickcissels near the corner of MD-313 and Ell Downes Rd in Queen Anne's Co (near Ingleside). These birds have been song duelling in a fleabane and dock filled ditch and field margin since 14 June near the first red cedar on Ell Downes Rd. Among the warblers were Prothonotary (confirmed with food for young) and Worm-eating in CW. There were two Vesper Sparrows in a large soybean field on Lentz Rd in the CW block, along with fair numbers of Grasshopper Sparrows scattered around in both blocks. A Pileated Woodpecker was in the CE block (on Bee Tree Rd), and there were a couple of good sized Purple Martin colonies in CE. It was heartening to hear a number of bobwhite in both blocks. We capped the day by checking on an abandoned house frequented by Black Vultures in our home block (Hanesville SE, Kent Co). We found a recent fledgling perched on the powerline (!) across the road from the derelict house. Young Black Vultures show some clinging down and a mane of fuzzy black feathers up the nape. As Bob noted in his Atlas posts there's lots of birds carrying food and many youngsters around right now, peak season won't last long.
