She just sipped a bit instead of gorging as usual. Then she went to a rhodendron shrub nearby--long since past flowering. Knowing that a robin is sitting on eggs less than 2 feet from the hummers hovering I watched with interest. The hummer darted back and forth in almost the same spot--not close enough to foliage to glean insects it would seem. Suddenly a leaf shifted as thousg tugged. She was gathering spider webs!! (A later check ascertained that a damaged spider web was indeed at that very spot.) I have fed and watched hummers for years, but never witnessed this before. How nice that it happens in an atlas period, and even better in a block I am working on--with much help.
