There was a colony of breeding Purple Martins, two poles with perhaps as many as four dozen apartments. I was unable to tell how many apartments were occupied, although I could see more than a dozen martins at any one time. This location is at the foot of 2nd Street SW between Coast Guard headquarters to the east and Fort McNair to the west. Public parking during the week is nearly impossible to find, although there ought to be ample street parking nearby on the weekend. The #71 metrobus goes there during weekday rush hour. Does anyone know of other active purple martin colonies in DC?
